What Is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is a form of holistic therapy that uses essential oils (plant extract). Aromatherapy is used to help restore balance in our body on a mental, emotional and physical level.  Aromatherapy treatments usually involving diluting pure essential oils in the application of the body such as an aromatherapy massage.  But essential oils can also be therapeutically used by adding essential oils to bathwater, a foot bath, a compress, a diffuser, a vapor for inhalation.

Essential oils are highly concentrated extracts from plants, fruits, trees, and resins, Essential oils have a wide range of therapeutic and medicinal benefits, that are also used by the pharmaceutical industry.

One of the key differences in aromatherapy compared to other forms of massage is the influence certain scents having in triggering changes in mood. Scent causes certain stimulation through the olfactory tract to the brain. Some essentials oils such as citrus oils have demonstrated an increase in mood. Our sense of smell is actually connected linked to the most intricate parts of the brain ruled by our basic instincts.  We know the aromatherapy application of certain types of essential oils can help improve circulation, reduce muscular tension and pains.  And that many of the plant extracts used in pure essential oils have been used in ayurvedic and natural medicine for thousands of years.
