Ayurvedic Medicine – The Origins of Ayurveda

Ayurvedic Medicine – The Origins of Ayurveda

Ayurvedic Medicine is one of the ancient forms of traditional medicine which is in practice from over 6,000 B.C. Indian mythological texts, the Vedas refer to this traditional medicine and its importance. Ayurveda focuses on the entire body healing with the help of detoxification. This eastern medicine’s main focus is on boosting the immune system, the energy systems through natural remedies. This world’s oldest holistic healing therapy is believed to bring balance between the mind, body, and spirit for better health.

Ayurvedic medicine is considered as an alternative to many western medicines and treatments. But in fact it is a holistic treatment that can be used alongside modern medicine. In the USA, Ayurvedic medicine treatments are considered a type of CAM (complementary and alternative medicine). The origins of the vedas and ayurvedic treatment are completely holistic.

How the Vedas and Ayurveda relate to each other?

Ayurveda has its roots originated earlier than the 8th century. The Vedas is the ancient Hindu religious textbooks that deal in healthcare techniques, astrology, spirituality, politics, human behaviour etc. Altogether there are four Vedas, the Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda, and Atharva Veda. Each of these Vedas deals in specific things with relation to society and living.

The Atharva Veda is an ancient book that deals with ancient medical practices. It has a details description of Ayurveda and various types of Ayurvedic treatments using plants with medicinal values. All these books were written in Sanskrit which was later translated into Chinese, Greek, and many other languages.

How is Ayurvedic Medicine linked with your life energy?

The yogic theory believes that when the mind, body, and soul connect with each other in harmony, it brings good health. Meditation,   Relaxation and balance helps to keep them working harmoniously. It is also believed that the human body is made up of five basic elements like air, fire, water, earth, and space. These elements combine together in pairs and form life energy or doshas which controls the working of your body. There are three major types of dosha as mentioned in Ayurveda. They are:

  • Vata dosha is a combination of Space and Air.
  • Pitta dosha consists of the two vital elements of fire and water.
  • Kapha dosha consists of elements of water and earth.

These doshas control different functions of the body. Whenever there is any disbalance in these doshas, a person falls into dis-ease, becomes sick. An Ayurveda practitioner will first understand a person’s dosha and recommend a specific treatment to balance it.

What Happens If The Doshas Get Imbalanced?

Vata Dosha

Vata Dosha is believed to the strongest among the three doshas. This traditional medicine theory underlines the fact that Vata Dosha controls cell division which is the fundamental of life. It controls your bowel movements and other organs of the body like heart, blood flow, etc. Vata Dosha also controls your mind and breathing rate. There are various reasons for which disbalance occurs in its functioning. Like unhealthy and improper diet, less sleep, fear, grief, etc. Once there is disbalance, there are high chances to develop conditions like heart disease, blood pressure, stress, anxiety, and even rheumatoid arthritis. Ayurveda deals with these health issues and offers natural remedy with the use of herbal medicines, detoxification techniques, etc.

Pitta Dosha

When there is a problem with regards to your digestion, it is believed that there is a disbalance in Pitta Dosha. The energy center in Pitta Dosha controls your metabolism. Once it functions properly it helps to break down the food with the help of various digestive hormones. If you are suffering from digestion problems, acidity or constipation, it means there is a disbalance in Pitta Dosha. If Pitta Dosha stops functioning properly there are high chances for these conditions to develop. When you eat too much junk food, drink less water or expose yourself to excess heat, you are likely to develop this problem. Ayurveda deals with these health issues and offers a natural remedy to treat them.

Kapha Dosha

Kapha Dosha, which is a combination of water and earth, controls your muscle growth and body strength. It also gives you stability, makes your immune system strong and keeps your weight under control. An unhealthy lifestyle like improper sleep, eating too much sugar and fast food, etc. can disrupt it. In case it gets disturbed, patients are seen to develop many health issues like cancer, diabetes, obesity, etc. The natural herbal healing techniques used in Ayurveda can help solve the root of these problems by rebalancing Kapha Dosha.

Holistic Wellness – 5 Pillars Of Holistic Wellbeing

holistic wellness 5 principles of holistic wellbeing today

5 Pillars Of Holistic Wellness

Learn the main 5 Pillars of Holistic Wellness, what holistic wellness and wholistic wholeness mean today. Learn why the 5 Pillars of Holistic Wellness is the foundation for optimal health, happiness, and growth.

Holistic And Wholistic Wellness

The term holistic stems from the theory of holism “system of therapeutics, especially outside the mainstream of scientific medicine, as [homeopathy], naturopathy or chiropractic, and usually involving nutritional measures.” The definition of holism was introduced by Jan Smuts in 1926 as “the whole is different from the sum of its parts.” Now although both holistic and wholistic in origins have different meanings, most modern-day definition of holistic is wholistic. In holistic wellbeing, it basically means different elements of our body and way of life have to be in balance so we are whole. Holistic wellness comes from a natural state of balance and being. Balance in the 5 Pillars of Holistic Wellness.

The 5 Pillars Of Holistic Wellness

If the 5 Pillars Of Holistic Wellness; our mental, emotional, physical, spiritual, and social wellbeing are in homeostasis. We have a much greater capacity to flourish and grow, to endure life’s challenges and stressors with ease. Because if all of these foundations are strong and connected. Our energy force, our wellbeing is more likely to flow.

Mental wellbeing is what maintains positive mental health. A healthy mindset is our mental resilience against life’s stress and challenges. Enhanced mental health helps us make healthy choices, recognise our value, our worth, and our potential. Good mental wellbeing increases our ability to share our gifts and skills with the world with ease. It helps us maintain healthier boundaries and good communication in our relationships. The ability to be fully in the moment is a useful way to encourage healthier mental wellbeing. You can learn how to be more in the present moment, instead of ruminating over the past or future by learning how to meditate.

Emotional wellbeing contributes to healthy self-esteem, self-worth, self-confidence, and good emotional intelligence. Positive emotional wellbeing helps us cope and thrive in our relationships. It often coincides very much with our mental wellbeing. Emotional wellbeing is having the ability to accept, own and express your emotional needs and feelings when required. If you have good. Emotional Intelligence you have the skill to handle relationships healthy. Daniel Goleman, suggests there are 5 elements of EQ and that includes empathy, self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, and social skills.

holistic wellness 5 pillars of holistic wellbeing

Physical Wellbeing relates to a healthy balanced and optimal functioning body. It is not just about being disease-free. But relates to our bodies’ energy levels, endurance, and flexibility. Physical wellness is our physical lifestyle, the ability to sleep, eat,  perform, be free from addiction and medication and be resilient against stress.More traditional forms of wellbeing such as Natural  Medicine or Ayurvedic Medicine, Naturopathy and Good Nutrition can help support the physical elements of wellness. Avoid as many toxins in your environment and your food as you can to support a healthier body, choose organic food and organic medicine when you can.

Spiritual wellbeing is the ability to experience meaning and purpose in life through a connection to one’s self, or a power greater than oneself. It is known to be one of the most powerful sources of strength, inspiration, and motivation on the journey of recovery and healing. Spiritual strength is often extremely personal and means different things to different people. But the ability to access the self,  tap into our Soul’s Essence can help us connect with a more spiritual way of being. It certainly helps lower anxiety, stress and depression levels. And can help cultivate more gratitude and positivity.

Social wellbeing is social inclusion and social belonging; Supported by, connected and in equilibrium with the society or world you live in. Social wellbeing can be linked to values, traditions, and lifestyle. Any social aspect that supports greater wellbeing. Your friends, family, community, the groups you are part of, your culture, religion, place of education or place of work. That is why feeling as if you belong to certain tribes can be very supportive in our mental, emotional, physical and spiritual wellbeing.

That is why so many people today are trending towards more holistic approaches, moving towards holistic or alternative medicine instead of more contemporary medicine. Which too often only focuses on the physical symptoms, physical or mental individual parts.

Benefits Of Natural Medicine

Natures Medicine versus Modern Medicine

Benefits Of Natural Medicine – The World Of Health

Many Benefits Of Natural Medicine

The benefits of Natural medicine or naturopathic medicines also known as natural remedies,  natures own medicine cabinet used to prevent or cure different types of diseases and illnesses.

Natural medicine is a traditional medicine that allows the body to heal through its own natural process. It involves treatments like holistic therapies, acupuncture, massage, exercise or the consumption of herbs and nutritional food. It is merely a loose set of medicines and treatment which is not always clinically or scientifically researched or a part of biomedicine.

Natural medicine can also be termed as holistic medicine mainly because it treats the individual in its entirety rather than just focusing on the symptom or disease.

The holistic perspective considers individuals as a whole as it strongly supports the idea that in order to achieve optimal holistic wellness, one needs to consider body, mind, emotions, and spirit as well.

Natural Medicine versus Modern Medicine:

DISADVANTAGES OF MODERN MEDICINE

Ever since the evolution of medical science, several medicines have been devised to treat different types of illnesses. Changes in medical treatment have helped manage and give immediate relief to many chronic and life-threatening conditions. But there are a lot of issues with this model of medicine.

  1. It is often quite expensive than natural medicine.
  2. Modern medicine tends to have a lot of side effects.
  3. Many people are put on certain medications for a long period of time which often increases the risk of withdrawal symptoms.
  4. There has been an increase in dependency issues on certain medications that give instant relief.
  5. Modern medicine helps treat the symptoms not the source of the disease.
  6. It is not aimed at preventing dis-ease or the source of the problem, dis-harmony or nutritional deficiencies.

BENEFITS OF NATURAL MEDICINE:

Herbal medicine or natural medicine has taken a backseat irrespective of the fact that it has a lot of benefits in the short and the long run. Some of the advantages of natural medicine are mentioned below:

  1. Natural Medicine is often more cost-effective.
  2. They support balance, many help boost the immune system.
  3. It can help overcome nutritional deficiencies and support healing at the same time.
  4. Generally, Natural Medicine has very few side effects, it doesn’t contain fillers.
  5. The raw materials required to create natural medicine are readily available in nature. They do not need to be adulterated.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NATURAL AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE:

Many people believe that natural medicine and alternative medicine are the same. However, in reality, they are different from each other. They fall under the same umbrella of CAM i.e. complementary and alternative medicine but they are not the same.

The type of treatment or therapies involved under the two types of medicines is the same but the way they are carried out is different.

Under natural medicine or complementary medicine, traditional western medicines are also used to help cure or prevent disease.

However, under alternative medicine, traditional western medicines are not involved and treatments like acupuncture, aromatherapy, massage, mind and body therapies are mainly used.

POPULAR FORMS OF NATURAL AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINES:

Many different forms of natural and alternative medicines exist that have been used for centuries by our ancestors. Some of the most popular forms that still exist are mentioned below:

1. Acupuncture

Acupuncture is derived from Chinese medicine. It is a treatment that is used to relieve pain and support the flow of Qi through the body through thin needles that are inserted into the human body.

2. Homeopathy

Homeopathy is a form of natural medicine that is based on the idea that the human body heals itself. It involves the diluted use of different herbs and minerals that can help treat different diseases.

Dandelion & Burdock Natural Remedies for digestive issues, natural medicine

3. Naturopathy

The naturopathy structure lies in the fact that manmade drugs and medications should be avoided as much as possible to avoid side effects. It promotes the idea that many illnesses can be cured by using nature, controlling diet and making healthy lifestyle choices, using natural approaches such as healthy eating, managing stress, using massage and exercise a part of life.

4. Massage

Massage is the healthy manipulation of tissues in the body. Various techniques are used to ease out the stress and pain in different parts of the body with the help of hands, fingers, elbows, knees, etc.

5. Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of pure essential oils. Extracts from bark, flowers, plants, fruits, and resins. Essential oils can be inhaled, added to the bath, applied, and massaged into the skin.

6. Ayurveda

Ayurveda is a century-old treatment that exists in the world today. It is based on the principle that health and wellness can be achieved by creating a balance between body and mind. It is based on different dosha body types.

7. Food As Medicine

In many ways, the right food can be natural medicine, natural healing. So many foods in their natural raw state, have healing and immune-boosting properties. A healthy diet fuelled by the right nutrients from our food not only treats and helps heal many illnesses but can also help prevent disease. So many modern diseases are caused by nutrient deficiencies.
